The Week of the Trois Glorieuses

The Week of the Trois Glorieuses took place November 14-21, 2006, and included private tastings, exclusive meetings with elite vigneron, meals at Michelin-starred restaurants, a grand winemaker dinner featuring a multi-course tasting menu, barrel tastings and seats at the world-famous wine auction, La Vente des Vins des Hospices de Beaune. Below is the itinerary for this extraordinary week. 

Overview
The days are divided into four parts: morning, lunch, afternoon and evening. Participation in all suggested “moments” is welcome but not obligatory. Time to yourself is respected.  

Your host is Wine Curator Cliff Young, who designs an inspired itinerary of wine tastings, meals and tours. 

During your week in Burgundy, visit the small family domaines where tastings are extremely rare and where the wine that is produced is in great demand and already spoken for, vintage-to-vintage. Among these may be Hubert Lignier, Domaine Georges Roumier, Domaine Jacques Prieure, Domaine Ramonet and Domaine Marc Colin.

Ground transportation in Beaune and daily concierge services are provided throughout the week.  

The weather is similar to Oregon in November…some sun, rain possible, stunning fog and moody skies. There are always plenty of umbrellas. 

Tuesday, November 14: Arrive
(Reception, Dinner)
Cliff Young’s Burgundy arranges transportation to Beaune by bullet train (via Gare de Lyon) or by private car and driver from Paris or other origination point. 

After a welcome reception, there is time to visit Beaune for an acquaintance tour and return to the accommodations to get settled and, perhaps, take a nap. 


This afternoon, an invitation is extended for a private tasting with Roland Masse, Director of Winemaking at the Hospices de Beaune. This is an intimate opportunity to taste all of the wines to be offered for auction on Sunday. This activity takes a long, leisurely time and is a remarkable experience. 

Dinner is provided at Ma Cuisine. Returning to the accommodations, a digestif awaits.  



Wednesday, November 15 – Becky Wasserman presents the Cote d’Or

(Breakfast, Tastings, Lunch, Dinner)
Begin an exclusive week of access to the wine culture of Burgundy as noted wine industry pioneer Becky Wasserman, who founded the export of independent great Burgundy producers, and her husband, Russell Hone, guide visits to two of the valley’s most extraordinary and reputable vigneron – Armand Rousseau and Federic Mugnier.  

Lunch is at a restaurant selected by Becky and Russell and dinner is prepared by Russell at the Wasserman home at Bouilland.

Thursday, November 16 – A Day in the Cote d’Or with Clive Coates
(Breakfast, Tastings, Lunch, Dinner)
Celebrated Master of Wine Clive Coates presents a programme of tours and tastings that begins with visits to the vineyards of Corton-Charlemagne and Hautes Cotes, stopping to admire the panorama above Nuits-Saint-Georges and continuing through vineyards to Vosne-Romanee. After a brief stop at Clos de Vougeot, visit Clos des Lambrays for a tasting of vintages 2005, 2004, 2003 and 2002.

Pass Chambertin vineyards on the drive to Gevrey for lunch at Chez Guy.

On the way to Meursault, take the vineyard road to Le Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. Visit Domaine Etienne Sauzet and taste a selection of vintages 2005 and 2004.

Dinner is with Clive Coates.

Friday, November 17 – Cliff Young presents Vintages of Burgundy
(Breakfast, Tastings, Lunch, Dinner)
This morning, Wine Curator Cliff Young escorts two remarkable tasting events: first, at the domaine of Pierre-Yves Colin, a barrel tasting of the wines purchased at last year’s Hospices de Beaune auction; then, an exclusive tasting at Magnum, a private wine club in Beaune where old vintages, including Hospices de Beaune wines from the 1930s and 1940s, are featured and an elegant lunch is served. 

The late afternoon and early evening are at leisure. Optional Cooking and Wine classes with Chef Mike Weist and Sommelier Sue Berger are offered. The kitchen is an inviting place today as much of the preparation for Saturday’s Grand Winemaker Dinner takes place. 

Dinner is provided at the Michelin three-star Lameloise.

Saturday, November 18 - Beaune Market and Winemaker Dinner
(Breakfast, Lunch, Tastings, Dinner)
This morning begins with a visit to the famous Beaune market followed by lunch in town. In the afternoon, Cliff Young escorts a tasting at Jacques Prieure.

This evening is the Grand Winemaker Dinner prepared by Chef Mike Weist. Special guests are winemakers Pierre-Yves Colin and Sébastien Caillat representing jeunes talents, the next generation of gifted winemakers in Burgundy, and Clive Coates. The multi-course tasting menu is a true market menu of the freshest ingredients selected at the Beaune market this morning. There is live music for dancing. Then, bon nuit.  

Attire is warm casual for the market visit and lunch. Dress for dinner can be formal, but a more casual elegance will feel quite at home. 

Sunday, November 19 - Hospices de Beaune Auction
(Brunch, Dinner)
Brunch is from the talented hands of Chef Mike Weist. There is time to review the wines to be auctioned this afternoon and evening.  

Then, off to the auction! Our negotiant buys barrels on behalf of those who found their favorite wines at Tuesday’s private tasting. Cliff Young’s Burgundy has select seats in the small auction hall and spaces can be traded from the village to the auction, as members wish.  

Beaune is astonishing today. Frogs legs, escargot and black truffle stands abound. Cannons explode. Music and festivity fills the village.     

After the auction, it is back to the accommodations for Burgundy black truffle omelets, some final chats and denouement. Then bon nuit

Attire is warm but dressy for the auction.  

Monday, November 20 - Private Event or Tastings in the Corton
(Breakfast, Lunch)
A limited number of invitations are available for Club members to attend the private Drouhin paulee, an event of extraordinary reputation, on a first come, first serve basis. 

Or, choose to enjoy wine tastings in the Corton and lunch at Le Charlemagne restaurant, a Michelin one-star in Pernand Vergelesses.

The evening is at leisure, with suggestions for activities, concierge services and transportation provided. 

Tuesday, November 21 - Depart
(Breakfast)
Cliff Young’s Burgundy arranges transportation by bullet train or by private car and driver to Paris or other desired destination.
